Help Identify Asian Vase

So I happened upon an auction with some great prices on Asian collectibles. Most of them were Chinese, so I'm assuming this vase is too.  Trouble is, I'm just getting my feet wet with Asian items, so I'm having trouble researching this.  A couple of questions for the group:

1. Any tips on how to research Asian marks and makers when you don't read the language?

2. Anything you can tell me about this vase?

It was billed as mid-century, so likely vintage rather than antique.  The daughter who's Mom had passed said it was bought in San Francisco and was "very expensive".

To start with....this vase is,nt Asian,its Oriental...China is in the Orient...

This may help you but keep in mind that many marks only identify the area,,not the maker !! And the slightest variation can change the meaning of the mark !!

The Orient is in Asia.


Nice celadon vase. I'll ask a friend if they can read the signature

" Very expensive " is subjective but i'd be surprised if you could get more than a couple of hundred dollars for it.

The bottom character above the red seal mark i know from the Guangxu period porcelain, and it refers to the first part of that word - " Guang ". However, i don't know the other character so i'll ask.

I keep reading that items exported from China to the U.S. were required to be marked with either "China" or "Made in China" beginning in 1890.  Can any conclusions be drawn from the fact that this vase has neither of those?  Either that it predates 1890 or is a piece that was not made for export?

No because those " rules " aren't perfect. Plenty if items are exported from China or Japan without those words on them.

They were very lax on that requirement !!
