Charles Dickens Great Expectations 1862 book
« on: November 01, 2013, 06:39:31 pm »
I saw this book fallen behind a bunch of other books at a thrift store.  Picked it up and it was Charles Dickens Great Expectations published by The Book League of America.  Upon researching I found it is the only one they published without illustrations in 1862.  Question is according to this website http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Great_Expectations its publication seemed to be at the same time as the other company that published it.  This one is in one volume though and is the only one they ever published without illustrations.  Is this considered a first edition too?  What kind of value does it have?  Can't find another on the web.

I just love old books...especially thick ones...they burn a lot slower than logs...a few months ago I got 52 volumes of the Encyclopedia Brittanica..for £5 + 20% commission..at our local auction house..they were dated 1954...it took me two journeys to lug them all home..as they weighed near a 100kg...they,ll go well in my woodburner...which reminds me..its that time of year again..."what time of year you may ask"....chopping up dining table time of year....No..not the one i made...just the one,s that no one wants at the auction house... ;D
I make no excuses,and no apologies....but i like a good Malt,

Riddles .."who mentioned anything about riddles....but since you asked...these are just for you... ;D
...Riddle 1:
What has roots as nobody sees,
Is taller than trees,
Up, up it goes,
And yet never grows?

Riddle 2:
Voiceless it cries,
Wingless flutters,
Toothless bites,
Mouthless mutters.

Riddle 3:
It cannot be seen, cannot be felt,
Cannot be heard, cannot be smelt.
It lies behind stars and under hills,
And empty holes it fills.
It comes out first and follows after,
Ends life, kills laughter.

Riddle 4:
Alive without breath,
As cold as death;
Never thirsty, ever drinking,
All in mail never clinking.

Riddle 5:
This thing all things devours;
Birds, beasts, trees, flowers;
Gnaws iron, bites steel;
Grinds hard stones to meal;
Slays king, ruins town,
And beats mountain down.
I make no excuses,and no apologies....but i like a good Malt,

Think the dates / publisher have you confused a bit. This looks more mid 20th century in binding / printing and Book League of America was established in 1930

Looks like one of those Readers Digest type things.

Here,s a cracker from my  Hippy Bible...I,ve read the 3 volumes more times than i can remember...and watched all 3 films..one after the other..10.1/2 hours of ...wonderment...Avr il thinks i,m Nuts... :D

Three Rings for the Elven-kings under the sky,
Seven for the Dwarf-lords in halls of stone,
Nine for Mortal Men, doomed to die,
One for the Dark Lord on his dark throne
In the Land of Mordor where the Shadows lie.
One Ring to rule them all, One Ring to find them,
One Ring to bring them all and in the darkness bind them.
In the Land of Mordor where the Shadows lie.

I was disappointed they didn't show the two watchers outside Cirith Ungol in the films, Wullie.

The rabbits in the first part of The Hobbit were ridiculous, too

There are quite a few copies of Great Expectations published by Book League of America that are up for sale on Abebooks. They range from a low of $3.75 to a high of $45. It looks like none of them have a publication date in them. http://www.abebooks.com/servlet/SearchResults?bi=0&bx=off&ds=30&pn=book+league+of+america&recentlyadded=all&sortby=1&tn=great+expectations&x=32&y=11

I also ran google searches for Book League of America. They were established in 1930:

Gollum asked this ...after Bilbo...had asked.."what have i got in my pocket"..which was not really a riddle...but more of a question..Gollum actually squeezed 3 answers in...the first being..handses,..but luckily Bilbo had just removed his hands form his pocket...Gollum then thought about what he kept in his pocket...fish bones...etc,...then he spat out..."String or Nothing"..to which Bilbo replied...wrong.... .. ;D
