Ceramic - pottery, majolica?
« on: November 16, 2013, 10:35:53 pm »
Is there a ceramics person out there who could comment? I do not know exactly what the material is so I am guessing ceramic? Looks like gilt trim. Do not know the age or maker. There is a flaw or mark on the bottom, embedded in the glaze, but no other marks.
Is it a majolica tureen? Too small for soup. 8 in. long, 5 in. deep, 6 in. high.
What is the term for the three dimensional fruit? What company might have made this? Anyone agree it may be 1930s? 40s?
I would like to descibe it in order to sell it. Thank you for your help!

With all that pattern going on it was almost certainly 1940ish !! I have seen lamps from that period made similarly !! Too many patterns on one piece !!  Fruit, flowers, people,,they tried to cover it all !!  It is most likely just a covered container that could be used as a candy dish or for almost anything !! Small wrapped candies would be a good guess !! From the indentations in the bottom I don`t think it had a table use !!

Look like Japan to me by the face of the figurine. I would guess it is fairly light in weight from the 1950s. Had a foil label that came off from washing.

This piece weights just under two pounds. Does weight help determine who or where it might be made?

Thanks to all! I looked at the images but hesitate to say what mine is because I only found French, German and Italian majolica on the web.  Those are nicer than mine!
and yes, to all who are thinking it - :D it IS GAUDY! I got it from an estate sale.     ;D
