Sherbet glasses? Help
« on: December 05, 2013, 10:26:03 am »
Hi, my mother owns these glasses and I am curious to find out more about them. I would love to get a hold of a couple more of these. I can't seem to find any marks on the glasses and all I know is that they are bought in Europe, possibly London. Not even sure they are valuable or anything, but I find them to be very pretty. Anyone out there that can help me?

Thank you so much in advance :)

Beautiful sherbet glasses!!!!  Yes that is what they look like they are!  Looks like fine crystal as well.

Can you please tell how tall they are?  There are short sherbet glasses and there are taller ones that doubled as champagne glasses (until they discovered that tall slender cups retain the bubbly longer!)

Two ways to help distinguish if it is crystal:
1)Put a small bit of water on your pointer finger and moderately run it around the top lip of the glass.  Once friction/warmth builds up the glasses will "sing" if they are real crystal!
2)  When crystal is clinked by flipping it GENTLY with your finger -  it produces a "ping" ringing sound whereas when glass makes a "thud" abrupt

As for for the pattern....hopefull y the ones who have a passion for glass collecting on there will either know it right off...or you may have to wait.  There were so many patterns out there by so many companies that many never find out the patterns.  But, let's be hopeful!!!

I have books I could check, but replacement.com will tell you and offer replacements to boot! I can check tomorrow.  It's late here.

Everyone has covered all the starter bases, Kc on how to tell if they are indeed crystal, mart to  check ebay for a match, greenacres to check replacements & I would  send them photos in an email they may find them for you. They are beautiful but I do not recognize the pattern, They look to be a country style design my gut says made in Italy, Could they be from that area or are you sure about London?? Other than that you will need to search crystal etched stems  etc.. and  you could look at thousands and still not find them   :-[  but good luck  let us know if you find the maker!!

Bad thing about Replacements. com is you need the pattern name or maker to find them !! Or that's the only way I know !! You might know an easier method GA !!

Thank you so much for all the information!

I am not at my mothers right now, so I can't check or measure the glasses, but I'm 99% sure they are crystal. Not certain about height though, but I think they are the short type of sherbet glasses.

I have checked ebay and found nothing yet, but as you say, there is quite a bit to go through, especially when you don't have a maker OR a pattern.

Also not at all sure about London, but I don't think they are bought in Italy. I wish I could ask my mother, but I want to get them for her as a present, and that would spoil the surprise.

So I'll keep looking and I'll try sending replacemants an email with pictures :)

Try adding "European" to your ebay search !! Maybe that will cut down the volume some !! Then try "English" for the London possibility !!

Happy new year everyone. I just wanted to update you on the glasses. It turns out they are bought in Stockholm and are the glasses used at the first Nobel Prize dinner. Have had no luck finding more though, but now you know.

Thank you so much for all the help!
