Alabaster was much cheaper to get and use (not as hard as marble and weighs less).  It is a gypsum.

However, many times alabaster was mistaken for marble.

Can you scratch it with your nail? (on the underside)?

For fun, searcg "vintage alabaster dog ashtray" and you will see LOTS show up!!!!

Very nice!  They for sure have a market.  I have 2 watchers on mine so far.  Not sure if I have set my price too high though.  I like to chase rainbows.   lol

These were also known as coin holders/trays for the men that didn't have a valet/stand.
