Numbers on the back of Homer Laughlin plate
« on: January 09, 2014, 08:14:31 am »
I recently came across a Homer Laughlin JF Kennedy memorial plate. I am wondering what the numbers on the back mean. Under the makers mark is A57N8 which I assume is a date or a treatment. There is also a "100" or maybe "1 00." Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Loui,

Found this site to look up the numbers:

http://www.restaurantwarecollectors.com/forums/misc.php?do=page&template=hlaughlin

However, the date fall in 1957, which doesn't make sense since Kennedy died in 1963. Might have it been a re-issue of another plate, only this one has the dedication on the front.

Your plate show up as part of this sale:

You can Google "In Memoriam John Fitzgerald Kennedy May 29, 1917-November 22, 1963."  and get lots of results for same plate.

Excellent info! Thank you so much. i thought the numbers might have been a date, but then was also confused- unless the people at Homer laughlin know something I don't. There's one for the conspiracy folks! I saw that there were many others, but I haven't found one with that 1 00 stamp on them. Any thoughts as to what that might be?

Possibly a price stamp if it was ever at a flea market, thrift store ect !!  If that's it,, alcohol should remove it !! I have taken lots of price stamps off with alcohol but you may have to go over it several times by rolling and lifting up !!  Easier than smearing it !!  It would not be a part of the Laughlin mark !! They would have been more permanent !!

The marks on the back of many, but not all, HLC dishes contain a date code. For example the digits on this photo indicated it was made in Oct. 1932 (J39) in city of Newell in factory #8 (N8). This mark contains no information about the shape or treatment of the china.

This disagrees with the information given in your link but i think 1932 might be a typo, though it shows to double check the information given on the web !

I had a quick google and found several JFK plates with this code on the back. Maybe they had excess stock and in the rush to produce souvenirs after JFK's assassination, they printed the image on plates made in 1957 ?

Ipcress, I totally agree that they used older stock to produce the plates...think of the buying frenzy and demand the public had for JFK memorabilia.  (Wow, hard not to put several exclamation marks!)  :)

Homer Laughlin was really good about marking their items overall.
