Something I learned about copper cookware when I was a young bride- Modern stuff comes lacquered and is considered for decorative purposes only. This has to be removed if you want to use it to cook. If you do it wrong, it can come out uneven, chemical burn the piece and discolor it and the remaining lacquer. I ruined at least one pot. I'm wondering if that is what I'm seeing on this pot. I would use copper polish on it and see if it comes clean or if you have discoloration issues. The inside looks like it is "tinned". If so the surface will be kind of powdery and it comes off. I'm not sure of the safety of cooking with tinned cookware, so do a little research before your next pasta dinner!

thanks tales but I don't do much "serving" here, it was and will be a decorative piece.  I guess I'm wondering about its age...whereabouts it came from...

I find that most Middle East or Ottoman antiques on the market these days have been made within the last two or three decades and intended for the export market or to deceive collectors in to thinking they are older than they are.

Masses of bladed weapons, trinket boxes, tobacco boxes etc that first appear old are simply cheaply made.
Of course, some are simply cheap or crudely made products for domestic use.


Does the cover simply lift off ?

Here I thought I had such an antique deal from goodwill but have to agree, if it was for serving there was as much serving on this as I do at home.
