I'am not one of the Gal's. But it is a Canadian, Peacock chair. Late Victorian.

;D ;D ;D ;D    Britt posted that early this morning and was still on-line 2+ hours later so I just posted that comment to ease his/her possible anticipation.  ;)

First of all, like the piece!

Can you please list the dimensions of the chair?  Height of seat as well.  Also, that picture of the bottom of the chair could help and any construction joints!  Thanks!

It is definitely in the fashion of a peacock chair!

First impression I got was a vanity chair.  But could also possibly be a nursing chair.

I'm from the South - but please don't mistake my Southern Manners/Accent/Charm as a weakness!

I was reading some of my books. I saw the nursing chair which this does look like, but I see another chair which they call a "Victorian Low Chair". Would this be a possibility?

Almost impossible to assign a distinct style or use to chairs made as a single !!  Nursing chairs were more traditionally rocking chairs with a slightly lower profile !! But since the makers often varied seat heights slightly from mfr to mfr any one could be considered a nursing chair if it fit the profile !! Same with vanity chairs !! They were made as a single chair and were varied as well in look and size !! So basically it fits the profile for the peacock chair so that would be its style,, as to its use,,I would vote on vanity chair !!  Looks very uncomfortable to be a nursing chair with that back !!  Imagine holding a baby and having to sit in that !! I would want to relax a bit if it were me !!

The term Peacock chair only refers the shape of the back !! So if the shape fits that's normally what they are called !!  Not unusual for many variations to have been made depending on the mfr !!

No question on this one. :D

Where did you find that???  That is an amazing chair!!!!  I want one.

No I agree about the peacock chair, but is there a mixed style there.  I was reading to learn about chairs more. I didn't see the peacock chair, but kept reading. I see the peacock style back. I was just curious about the seat itself.

I know the term is probably misapplied, but I always referred to those low seated chairs as "Slipper Chairs'.

Thank you, Rauville. I see so the backs are usually upholstered.

We are looking at the chair on and angle. Look carefully I would agree. it is a slipper chair. I have been advised the Canadian's have distinct features in different part's of Canada.

This chair. British Columbia.

Well,, the slipper chairs were pretty consistently sized at about 15 inches for seat height !! So maybe the person that posted will measure it !! It should be within a half inch or so of that height !! Slipper chair with a peacock back,,definitely different !!

:D I know about "nursing rockers/chairs" but didn't know the name "slipper chair".

The name makes sense, though, ..... lets you get close to your task but without straining too much.

Slipper chairs were popular into the 50`s when some ladies wore hosiery with seams !!  Remember those ???
