Help with HUGE pulley and Large GE fan
« on: January 26, 2014, 01:42:15 pm »
Hi guys.
Bought a box lot of old industrial stuff at an auction last night.
These are a couple things I need help with.

The first is a HUGE pulley/block tackle.
It was made into a nautical lamp by somebody but it was busted up. I took the lamp components off. May rewire it so I can use the holes he unfortunately put into it.

My question is, is there a way to tell if this was indeed a nautical pulley? It is giant. With hook up it is about 19.5". Weighs close to 50 pounds.
The ID plate on the side has a star logo and says "Boston & Lockport Block Co."

The second piece is a large, black GE fan. About 18" fan, so on the larger side. With the ID plate I can't find any info on this model. Any ideas on age or value in non-running condition?

Thanks so much guys!

(Sorry, tinypic will not orient these the right way no matter what I do)

In my experience bigger is better for pics like this. People always complain pics are too small...
These are right from my phone so I didn't think they'd be that big.
If you right click and open in new window it should just fit to your screen.

Your fan appears to be a 1941 Standard 16" desk model.

Scroll down the page to find it:

In regard to the pulley; I really can't tell, but I would think a marine model would have bronze sheaves. This one looks more like a typical "barn" type.

Nailed it on the fan! Thanks.

For the pulley, I grew up on an old working farm. Never saw any pulleys anywhere close to this size which is why I thought maybe it was for something more industrial like a port or something.

It looks like a large antique ship pulley.

The Fan I would ask $50.00 Dollars. The block & tackle, No less then $ 125.00 Dollars. A Salvage store would ask $ 300.00 on the block & tackle.

Even though the block and tackle has a little damage from being turned into a lamp?

Not going to hurt it. It will be setting on some one's desk, as a Conversation piece.

My question is, is there a way to tell if this was indeed a nautical pulley? It is giant. With hook up it is about 19.5". Weighs close to 50 pounds.

A 50 lb 3-rope pulley is for pulling or lifting mighty heavy objects.

If marine then probably used in dry-dock or pulling boats out of the water.

Or it may have been used in the oil patch or in a manufacturing plant. ???

Another question would be, was the "Boston & Lockport Block Co." the maker of the pulley or just the owner of it? (I mean like they put their name on it so it wouldn't run off.  ;D)

Very good point!
Any idea on the era it's from?
