Well the central part of the mark on the base relates to the British Registration mark 1868-1883. The letters and numbers in this instance signify November 14th 1878 when the design for that box ( and probably a particular mechanism ) was first registered. Not sure on No 106 L&S - maybe a brand of cigarettes ?

However, the case was made later ( early 20th ) and retailed at Tiffany's.

What does the box look like inside ?

Why is the stamp so old yet the box made later on in 20th ? The box on the inside is plain same pattern as outside except underneath lid is a fancy swirl design

Its not that the mark itself is old but the registration was done at an earlier date !!  Same as patent dates are marked on items here even though the item itself may have been made yesterday !!

It can happen. Also, the whole mark might be registered to the company that designed the case / box

There was a company called Levi & Salaman who were founded in 1870. They became well known as very fine silversmiths, particularly rare pin cushions etc. but perhaps they designed the case / box during the early years of the company - they initially made items from gilt or base metals.

It's possible and worth pursuing to a degree because the case / box will be worth more if it was designed by Levi and Salaman. That registered design will be available from the National Archives in Kew Gardens, i think. The I on the top is a roman numeral which relates to the Group of items that design was allocated. Group I is metalware.

The National Archives link is below and you might need reference BT 45 to BT 49.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Original-1800s-Tiffany-Co-Union-Square-NY-City-Hand-Fan-With-Original-Box-/251429609225?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item3a8a5f5f09

This may be a situation where Tiffany & Co. were the retailers for items made by another mfr. There were a couple on ebay that had Union Square but not Union Station !!  Don`t get too excited about the prices they list these things at,,no one is bidding !!
