antique Stained glass window
« on: February 10, 2014, 03:50:20 pm »
We were at an antique fair and found this window. The wood frame is not soft and seems to be in good condition. The glass looks good to my untrained eye, there is a very small spot or two that I see light between the leading and the glass. We would like some ideas on how to hang it for best effect. We were thinking maybe a light box, but don't know how to do it. Any ideas on age or value? I hope we didn't pay too much. We are in Iowa if that will affect the value. The light shining through is very pretty. The center flower is clear beveled glass with cut center lines and the center is red 6 sided bevel. The glass does need to be cleaned if anyone can help with that. I'll supply the soft rag when you get here.  ;D Thanks for your help.

I have a transom that is that shape. They usually fit above the door. I took hooks and screwed them into the window jam and took chain and hung it in the window. I love it.

That's a beauty....you did well! Hard to say on age but I have one that is from a house built in the 1880's and another from the 1930's. I have two picture windows with one in each. Here is the one in my dining room.]

Bothe of these are gorgeous !! !! As far as cleaning,, either dilute plain rubbing alcohol 50/50 with water or the stained glass place here just uses Windex diluted a bit !! Main thing is to lay it on a flat surface, table or something, with some old magazines and a towel to take up the space between the glass and the table !!  Then spray paper towels with the cleaner and wipe each section !! Don't spray the window itself, just the paper towel !! What you want to take care with is putting pressure on the panels and causing the leading to bend !! That why it needs to be supported !!
Is the window good and tight ??
If it were me,, I would hang it by putting two of the little eye screws that you can get with a picture hanging kit on both top and bottom of the sides, then buy enough chain at the hardware store to go completely around the glass and up through the eye screws to the top !! Then hang !!  No stress on the frame that way !!

It does seem to be tight within the frame. It is 18 x 48 inches, sorry I forgot to mention that. It is very heavy. The purple one is beautiful and would give your room a really pretty glow.

The weight is one reason it should be supported completely around the frame !!  The way I mentioned above has the frame resting on the chain instead of the frame hanging by the chain !! Sometimes the weight will cause joints to loosen, especially in todays heated houses !!
