Old map
« on: February 18, 2014, 01:50:40 am »
I have a old map of the county I grew up in. It is a plat map and list each property owner. It was sold by the local paper and is dated August 1 1902.  It measures 50"x60" and is on some type of material, not paper. I would like to display it on the wall just because it looks neat. It has been rolled up for years. Any type of frame that big is going to be expensive. It probably doesnt have much value to anyone except maybe someone local. Anybody have any ideas?

WOW, that’s a big one. 4’ 2” X 5’.

A local or county surveyor would surely like to have that.

I wouldn’t hang it on the wall unless it was protected so I suggest you get a friend, a carpenter or cabinet maker to make you a simple “box” frame out of 1 1/2” x ¾” clear pine ....... and mortise a piece of Plexiglass in it.

The Plexiglass will probably cost you the most, to wit:

Plexiglass Acrylic Sheets in Clear 1/8" x 60" x 96" Acrylic Sheet

And ps: use a piece of 3/16" Luan pllwood for a back.

Might have to go to a hobby shop but there is a frame intended for posters  that is literally cut to fit !! A cheapie but it would work !! Just use double stick tape to attach it to the Luan Cogar was talking about   !! Then just measure and cut each length and slide it over the backing and map edge !!  You would have to hang it from the Luan not the frame !!

Good suggestion, Mart, I didn't know about those frame thingys.

And your mention of a Hobby Shop reminded me of something that might work as well as the Luan, ..... I think it's called "foam core board" which comes in 4' X 8' sheets and you can cut it with a razor blade knife.  Or a 4'x8' sheet of 1/2" rigid insulation should work.

Thanks for the suggestions. I will stop at Hobby Lobby and see what they have.

They are a lightweight edge really,, intended to dress up posters and can be cut with scissors !! Foam core would be excellent and lighter than Luan !!  Good idea !!
