What is the style and period of this settee and chair?
« on: February 24, 2014, 01:58:46 pm »
Hi everyone.  I inherited this set and I can't figure out the period or style of this chair.  I believe it might be a late 19th century style but also not sure if they are reproduction or antique.  I thought maybe Eastlake or a variation but haven't come across anything similar online. Can someone out there help me? (don't worry - they are not still sitting in the garage!) Thanks.

Can you get a better pic of the front of the settee,  cant see much from the side !! Try to stand in front so we can see the entire thing !!

I'm so sorry.  I know these are bad photos but the pieces are at our cottage in Michigan right now and I'm in California and these are all I have right now.  If you click on the picture and then zoom in you can see the carvings on the settee a little better.  It looks like vines and grapes or berries that are cut out as opposed to carved in to the piece.  Sorry I don't know the right terminology.

No it isn`t on this set !! Its maple and around late 40`s or 50`s !! No particular style either as they were designed more for a sunroom than a parlor !! Although they could be used elsewhere !! It looks like maple !!

I'm curious, Mart.  Apparently you've seen this style of furniture before?  It makes sence to me that it would be from the 40s or 50s.  I think if looks like Maple too.  Do you have any idea of who the manufacture is?

I'm also just remembering that the original upholstery might have been a tapestry or maybe needlepoint - something like that, with some texture to it.

I have seen similar sets before but have not seen a true needlepoint upholstery on one !! There was a kind of a twill fabric that felt similar to needlepoint but was machine made !!  It is kind of heavy and was used  quite a bit back then !!  A fabric expert I am not !! LOL  If you looked at it close it had a weave that was very distinct !! Most of those I have seen did have a floral or greenery pattern !! The  fabric that's on it seems to go well with the style !!
