Looking for some help id'ing bulldog ashtray and terrier Box
« on: March 09, 2014, 08:29:05 pm »
What do you think these are made out off?  The bulldog ashtray is fairly heavy.  (It's pretty dusty, I haven't cleaned it yet.)  The Scottish terrier is solid.  The bottom of the bulldog is marked US PAT 142694 I looked it up on a patient database but the item didn't match mine.  The terrier box has a mark with a K in the corner.  Still googling it.

Very nice. Usually they are pricey. You can check eBay some are usually on there.

Have researched the bulldogs over the years since my uncle had a collection of them.  Typically from the 1930's.

Your bulldog reminds me of the style of the Ronson bulldog.  Believe they were called Ronson Striker Lighters.  Theirs were made of bronze.  Does your dog have any markings on it's chest?

I agree there isn't a patent number with that information.  Some imports did put patent numbers on them in hopes of sales.

This can sell from $35 - $60.

The second one looks like pot metal.  The bulldog looks bronze.  I sold a pot metal one recently that look like your second on but on stone for $30.

I don't think the bulldog was original to the ashtray.  I was cleaning it, and the dog fell off :o  Good news, it is marked on the belly.  "Blecher"  The tray looks like it had something different mounted on it and maybe broke off?  The dogs feet look even.  One of the foot spots on the ashtray has a small stump.

I think both parts match well, I'll probably glue the piece back on or at least sell them together.

Boris Blecher is a USA foundry/maker from Philadelphia, PA and has several patents in the US.  The ashtray has a patent assigned to it on Oct 30, 1945, US Pat 142694.  I imagine at that point is when he started marrying the figures with his ashtray. He made animal figures and Holy Water Fonts.  He expanded into making book ends, salt/pepper shakers, key rings, pocket knives, pipe holders, thermometers, calender stands, etc.

Just found this for patent searches:

All patent numbers must be seven characters in length, excluding commas, which are optional. Examples:
Utility --    5,146,634 6923014 0000001
Design --    D339,456 D321987 D000152
Plant --    PP08,901 PP07514 PP00003
Reissue --    RE35,312 RE12345 RE00007
Defensive Publication --    T109,201 T855019 T100001
Statutory Invention Registration --    H001,523 H001234 H000001
Re-examination --    RX29,194 RE29183 RE00125
Additional Improvement --    AI00,002 AI000318 AI00007

I put a "d" in front of the ashtray number and it popped up.  (without the "d" a completely different item has the same number)
Thanks for the help guys!

You have to be very careful to look closely.  I almost pick up a lion this weekend but as I was walking down the stairs I saw the light metal and put him back fast.  He was also tagged as being bronze.  Bronze goes for big bucks and pot metal not much. Pot metal can't be repaired.
