Dresden Carl Thieme Ink Well
« on: March 17, 2014, 06:18:41 pm »
Hi all, i am trying to sell this beautiful dish for my grandmother. I was doing some research, thinking that it was a jelly/biscuit tray of some sort when i came across a similar item on Ruby Lane. It is apparently an inkwell with a tray for resting pens, or organizing the desk.

I believe that from that post mine is similar, so perhaps it is also Carl Thieme Dresden. would this piece have been hand painted in Germany?

The mark on the bottom is an "SP" and it says Dresden in blue underneath the SP mark

I am also missing the ink liner that is supposed to go into the attached ink well.

If anyone could shed some light onto the age of this piece, what you think it might be worth, or just some general info that would be greatly appreciated!!!

Thanks so much!!

Sächsische Porzellanmanufaktur Dresden (Saxon Porcelain Manufactory in Dresden), often known in English simply as Dresden Porcelain, is a porcelain factory in Freital near Dresden, which was founded in 1872 and still keeps alive the long tradition of European porcelain art. Since 1902, Dresden Porcelain has a blue "SP Dresden"
Should be worth quite a bit.

Beautiful piece!

Can you please post a better close up of the makers mark?

Hello!

here is an up close shot of the SP Dresden mark:

Any info on pricing, or age, or if this is a Carl Thieme piece would be so helpful!

Thanks so much!

This is about the only thing that i found that had a pretty well written description that was similar to my piece:

Any other thoughts on what it could be?

I'm thinking more like a tea service type thing.  Teacup, jam & scones perhaps?

Well, the one you linked to was quite similar,, is the container on yours also attached to the tray ??  After reading the above short history and a few other articles,,my opinion is that this one was not decorated by Carl Theime,,he did mark his with initials if I remember correctly !! But I do think it was done by his factory probably after his death !!  He had many artists and not all marked their work !!

Definitely an inkwell set!  They made gorgeous ones!!!  Usually the the porcelain well had a clear glass, or a plain porcelain insert, inside so as not to permanently stain the porcelain.

Carl Thieme would have had a mark on it.

Do believe the set was made by the factory but decorated by an unknown artist.

Could be a desk set,, perhaps a blotter went in the circular space ??  I could sure imagine scones and jam rather than pens !!

Great info, thank you!

Yes, the container on mine is attached to the dish. I dont have a liner with mine, but on the inside of the lid there is a trace of green... Which leads me to believe that it is a small ink spot on the porcelain underside of the lid
