Cast Iron Door Stoppers
« on: March 20, 2014, 08:02:39 am »
Hello,
I have 3 door stoppers that I believe are original pieces from the early 1900s but I'm not positive. The finish work looks good ie no power tool grind marks, but I was hoping for a little more verification. Any info is greatly appreciated.

The screw is correct for that time period but the casting gap seems wide.  How heavy are they? They look like possibly pot metal painted black and then rusted.

Both dogs are around 4lbs. The rabbit I will be posting is around 8-10lbs.

How do they feel? Original cast iron was finished smooth as a baby's bottom, while the newer pieces will have a gritty, grainy surface                                                               .

They are very smooth. I have a background in metals so pretty positive they are cast iron. My wife's grandmother and grandfather have collected antiques since the 1950s. I am doing a bit of fact finding for her now that she is looking to start selling some stuff.

I was kind of assuming that the last 2 where Hubley but I don't have much experience identifying them. The first one I just am not sure about. Especially the seem on the belly. The rabbit may even be heavier. Maybe more like 13-14lbs. And I'm not sure if it's visible in the picks but it looks to be 3 screws holding the rabit halves together.

Thanks for that info. Any idea of fair market on these? I am seeing prices all over the place for these. The French Bulldog has pricing from $100 to $700. That's quite a range.

The second dog looks much older than the first one to me.  The rabbit has wide gaps which makes me think it is more vintage than antique.

The one in the google search was Hubley !! Your Boston Terrier looks correct to me but may have had some touch up at some time !! That's not uncommon to find !!  Not sure about the rabbit and haven`t found the other one yet !! It would have been uncommon to find a rabbit painted like that !! Chances are it was not originally painted at all but someone got a can of spray paint at some time !!
