Help with my antique
« on: April 08, 2014, 07:16:43 am »
My dad passed away and in his treasures was  a rare (some research done and found out what it is but not the value of it) Unger Brothers sterling silver Indian Chief Check Protector. Thanks for any help. On the back it has Pat. Jan.7.1902 and marked sterling silver.

Found several of these doing a search !! Here is one you can check !! But keep in mind that shops are often overpriced !! I know they say "rare"  but that's not always the truth !!

If the shop bought it from you,,,expect about half that price !!  Try ebay if you are going to sell !!  Just be sure and put a reserve on it !!

That price does seem high. I wouldn't sell it.

Thank you Greenacres, its in excellent condition. I've never sold on Ebay, I might give it a try just to see what it would bring and like mart said put a reserve on it. Thanks guys for all y'all help. :)

Ebay is a blast to me !! I think you will enjoy it !! Just don`t link paypal to your personal checking account,,open a separate one for online sales then move funds to your personal account as needed !!

Check protectors like this are VERY collectible!  To have had one like this you had to be a very important person in a business or very well off!  Don't let this go cheap!!!! There are collectors out there who would love this! Have seen them sell for $1,200 + EASILY in great shape!!!!  If you sell on Ebay - PUT A RESERVE PRICE!!!!!  Hopefully you won't need it and it will sell high...but cover yourself!

Thanks mart for the good Ebay info. I buy off of Ebay and use the Paypal but that's cut and dry, it comes right out of my checking acct. I understand what you're talking about using a different account and just transferring the money into it. I may try to sell something of far less value just to get my feet wet so to speak. ;D  Thanks again

The separate checking account protects you in case there is a dispute about an item !! I have never had a problem with a buyer but when you get into higher priced items it can happen !!  I think it wise to start with a few smaller items just to get a feel for it !! You can always get advice here if needed !!

Thanks for the info and the advice KC. Just a little history on my Dad, he owned his own business for over 60 years and I can now see how the check protector would have helped him. My Grandfather had a clock and watch business and that's how my Dad made a living for so long. Again thanks for the info KC and I think I'll try my hand at EBAY.
