Bronze Ox w/ Boy Playing Flute Japanese or Chinese - Value?
« on: April 13, 2014, 09:30:24 am »
Hi All -

First time poster.

Just wondering if anyone could help me value this bronze statue.

Not sure if it is Japanese or Chinese.

Very fine quality details, have not seen similar examples although the pictures do not show the fine detail.

Anyone have any insights or ideas where I could get more information about this piece?

Thanks

KC

Can you please tell us the dimensions of your piece?

Famous ink drawings done by Gui Xu during the Ming Dynasty during the reign of Xiaozong (China).  His inks are famous.  This statue reminds me of them!

Similar in style but this one is an inkwell!

I'm from the South - but please don't mistake my Southern Manners/Accent/Charm as a weakness!

Thanks for the reply.

It is about 25cm (width) x 14cm (height) x 13cm (deep).

Solid and quite heavy with very fine detail on for example the hair of the boy and ox.

Hi, even if the theme of the boy on the ox is Chinese, your nice bronze looks Japanese to me, I would think in the style of the Tokyo school and around 1900. Unfortunately I can't read the maker's signature.

It's not that old.

Might be £50 or $90 unless someone falls for it.

Thanks for your comment.

How old would you say it is?

Maybe I was too quick dating it... could you post some better photos with more details, also of the boy?

I think the quality is not bad, maybe it is a bit later than I thought, Taisho Period (1912-1926). Ipcress, what Do you think how old it is?
