Meriedn B silver butter dish help needed
« on: April 28, 2014, 06:59:02 pm »
I bought this and the stamp is messed up( stamped over stamp)  researching the pattern I found it is Meriden B co.  Now looking at the mark I can see enough to feel that is right.  It is pattern 25o but I can't find anything much on it.  I found pattern 249 which is sterling on replacements.com.  I think it is an early 1800's pattern.  I tested a worn spot with silver acid and it turned red.  Indicating it is sterling.  can anyone help me find more on this?  I want to verify age, that it is sterling and pattern age.  thanks.

Meriden B co didn`t start making sterling till 1895 and then I don`t think they used the Meriden B name !!

Can you take a better picture of the double struck mark?

Just very odd...double struck for a sterling item.

Have quite a bit of Meriden items myself.

I have seen that date too but when looking further I found it started in 1806.  That is part of the problem that I found conflicting information and very little on them.  I found one place that starts them out in England then moves them to CT.

still working on it.  Very hard to get pics of silver.  IO did test as I said though and it tested sterling.  I have plate items and not the same result at all.

Where did you find that they started in the UK ?? They did start in 1808 but only made pewter and Brittania ware !! The company was founded in 1852 in Conn. !! Or that what all the major reference material says !! Was no reference to the UK !!  But there were Meriden named companies in the UK I think,, but no relation to this one !!

Meriden was really good about marking their pieces...was surprised that it would be like that.

Can you still post a better pic of the mark?  Regular light, no flash.

Did you read the information on this site about the company Rogers Smith Company located in Meriden?
http://silverandsilverplate.blogspot.com/2010/04/clearing-up-rogers-confusion-marks-and.html

Can you take a picture of the piece with the lid off?

What is the size/dimensions?  Is there a dish inside or a grate/screen?
