I have several Russian pieces in soapstone but they aren't as big in size as yours.  Never would have guessed.  Nice!

Soapstone is an interesting thing.  I have seen so many variations in color and feel.  Not sure why?   Some scratch very easy and others are very hard.  Maybe different parts of the stone?

I read up on it of course, its also used for powder (face), and talcum--yet this is really heavy and hard with the inside so silky soft

I think I will know this again if I see it

I have green, gold and brown soapstones.  They are heavy for size (actually are heavier than granite of same size). They feel smoothy/silky.

I just haven't seen any painted like this before.  Love learning something new!

In the earlier link on the one found on ebay it gave hardness according to color,,if I remember right !!  Never saw African art in soapstone !!
