Wooden School Desk?
« on: May 12, 2014, 09:00:57 pm »
I'm not really sure what this is, or even if it's an antique. So any insight would help.

There's no markings on it.

Thanks guys!

Welcome.

Can you please list the dimensions of the piece?

Depending on size,, 1940s or 50`s telephone table !! About the size of the older end tables,, phone books went in the slot also address books which used to be larger !!

That is what I was betting Mart.  Just wanted to verify height so it isn't a podium of sorts.

I get tickled at so many items that come across the site that we actually had/used growing up (or still have!)

Right,, and to think that our every day things are now considered antique by the younger generation !! Back then we only had one phone,, or two if you were lucky,,and it was usually centrally located so you could hear it ring !! The kitchen was the second location since women actually cooked back then !!

Thanks so much for all your replies!

Telephone table does sound about right. I was thinking circa. 1940s school desk, but telephone table makes more sense ahah.

I'm 17... so excuse the youth!!

Dimensions:

Height: 29.5"
Width: 18.5"
Depth: 13"

EDIT: I am looking to sell this, so if anyone knows what a reasonable price would be, or even if there's a market for it, that'd be great!

I wish I came across this thread earlier. I was given one of them when I moved into an apartment in 1980. I was divorced and that was the only piece of furniture I had besides an enamel top kitchen tables and chairs. The table came from a friend down the street who remembered the candlestick phone on it and the phone book inside. I used to keep a small TV on it. The TV had no sound so I would put the baseball game on the radio and watch it on TV, while I sat at my 1930s enamel table. That scenario fortunately  only lasted a couple weeks but I had that table for years after I was remarried.

Now if you still had that enameled table,, that would be great !!

As to this one,,if marketed with the nostalgia factor thrown in,, might sell easily !! Not for a lot but still,, money is money !!  Refinished would be better but that's additional expense !! Just advertise it as a retro telephone stand !! Someone will want it !!
And we like to have young people here !! Many of our regulars are in your age category !! They make a little money buying and selling the older items !!

Those enamel tables are pretty common in these parts. Chrome and Formica with the chairs vinyl in good condition is pretty hot right now.

Thanks to everyone who replied! I'm just looking for a buyer that'll come take it off my hands now. Perhaps some of the local antique dealers.

Better try Craigslist,, dealers would maybe give $5 or $10. if you are lucky !!  Like I said its all in how its advertised !!

(Mid Century retro 1940`s or 50`s telephone table !!  Slot for phone books or your latest magazines !!  Perfect as an end table, bedside table or could be used as a childs desk with a chair !! Could be refinished for a throwback to mid century era or painted and used in a Shabby Chic bedroom with a lamp and a vase of flowers !! )  Price/ OBO !!

This is how I would list the table !! Gets much more attention if you give them ideas as to how it could be used !!  Better than just ( Table for sale ) !!
