Clark's cotton spool cabinet 4 drawers
« on: May 20, 2014, 08:43:11 pm »
Anybody got any idea what this is?  I've read where they can date back to the late 1800's? Is this worth anything at all? It was given to me by an older friend of mine.

You have a spool cabinet and it is what you said...a cabinet for spools of thread.  These are very collectible.

In 1864, George and William Clark built a thread mill in Newark, N.J. and it became Clark Thread Co.
O.N.T. stand for Our New Thread which was coined by George Clark for this 6 strand thread.

It would help if your friend can give you a history of the piece.  The oddity about your piece is that it has "spool" and not "spool cotton" on it.  To help determine age, can you please pull out a drawer and take a picture of the inside of the drawer and the back of the piece.  Please advise if there are any splits damage to the cabinet or drawers as well.  Can you please describe if the fronts are glass or metal plate with the wording on them.

Here is one like yours that is up for auction on eBay. Watch this one and see what it sells for, it has 13 bidders and the auction just started: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Antique-Clarks-ONT-Spool-Cotton-4-Drawer-Cabinet-Counter-Top-Store-Display-yqz-/331205538344?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item4d1d637228

Talesofthesevenseas, I believe this is an older one with the "spools" on it.  Trying to somehow find a date on it.

Great find on the auction.  Bet it goes for a pretty penny!

I do believe this store counter display piece  could even be from as early as 1875 due to the names/initials on it.
