Royal Copenhagen Dinnerware learning what I can
« on: May 22, 2014, 04:36:21 pm »
I have about 79 pieces of Royal Copenhagen consisting of cups, saucers, plates, vase, teapots, serving dishes, etc.
Attempting to learn as much as I can about the value of these so that I can sell them at a fareprice and not be taken advantage of. Over the past couple weeks I took pictures of the items but unfortunately did not photograph every piece front and back not realizing that the marks on the back are important in dating the pieces. They are not with me where I live and would have to make special arrangements to have them photographed again.
Meantime, I made a list of all the items and the marks etc along with the number of pieces. I have been looking all over the internet to see if I can get some type of idea of what they are worth. They seem to range in dates from 1960's and one small vase from 1930's. I went to Royal Copenhagen's site and understand the marking descriptions. The challenge is how do I determine what these are worth. Is anyone aware of a good resource that will help guide me in determining the value of them. I would assume also that depending on the artist it may determine the value (initials next to series number).
If anyone has some experience in Royal Copenhagen and has any information to share with me it would be greatly appreciated.

I have checked eBay but can't tell what the items are actually worth compared to what they are selling for.

Thanks so much for any assistance.

Hi there and welcome to the group !!~   If you are looking to sell them,,the worth is only determined by what someone is willing to pay !!  Ebay would be your best resource !! You can value them as you wish but someone must actually be buying at that price for the value to be correct !!  Hope that makes sense !!

Thanks for your reply mart. I understand what you are saying. I guess it is really up to a person falling in love with the set of dinnerware. My concern about dealing on eBay is the cost involved in packing/shipping the set and the chance that things break. It was once packed and shipped across country before at the tune of $1,600.00.

Considering possibly contacting an antique dealer in Greenwich Conn which is close to where the dinnerware is so personal inspection can be done and transaction can be conducted in person and buyer can take possession personally and transport themselves. I realize there will be commission involved but I think the cost of the commission may be worth the cost instead of shipping costs and possibility of a return charge.

All suggestions are welcomed and appreciated. If anyone knows of a good dealer or auction house in the Conn area or northern NY area please pass it on to me if it is within the policy of the forum; don't want to break any rules. There are a lot on the Internet listed but that is just like picking out of the old book "Yellowpage" with a guess.

Any links that anyone can provide to help value them or resources would be appreciated.

Frogpatch, and a few other members may know of dealers that may accept consignment glassware but there again you will have to pay a commission !! Selling as a lot of all pieces would be difficult !! People just do not buy like that when it is so easy to purchase on ebay !! I have no problem with ebay and have never had a piece of glassware broken nor do I pay for shipping boxes or supplies other than ocassionally a roll of bubble wrap and packing tape !! You can get better boxes from the dollar store if you go the day after their delivery truck runs for free !! Also keep all the plastic bags you get when buying at WalMart or grocery markets for packing !! Newspaper will work as well !! Just pick a box slightly larger than the item you are shipping, wrap it with bubble wrap and tape it , then center the item in the box and stuff the plastic bags all round till the item is secure in center and does not move or bounce when the top is shut !!  I usually just hold the box top closed and shake it,, if I feel it move,, more plastic bags !! Then tape well all joints on the box and mail !!
The buyer pays for shipping costs !! Ebays fees are very little !!

What is the name of the pattern your have?  Some patterns are more popular than others.

Mart: Thanks for the advice on packing and other thoughts.

KC: I believe from what I have been learning it is "Full Lace" and dated in the mid 1960's. I am not sure by the full lace because I have yet to find the description of full lace and half lace on the Internet so I will know for sure what to look for on the piece. The only thing I assume at this point is the artwork on the piece it self; the blue color is more plentiful on full compared to half. I have compared my pictures to pictures on the net and this is all I can conclude at this point. The dating is easier because Copenhagen's site shows you exactly how to date the pieces. I would assume the full lace is more expensive and the older pieces would be more expensive. I see on Copenhagen's site that most full lace is out of stock so I may assume there is more of a demand for full lace. I have contacted a few on line antique dealers with no replies; either they are not interested or don't read their email.

Attempting to upload two photos of a piece. Front and bottom. The files are large so have to put one in each post. I hope I did it correctly. If anyone can identify and help would be much appreciated.

And the bottom to show markings.
The line under the "O" in Copenhagen indicates it was made in 1963. The artist was "xxe" and the series 1032. I think this is the full lace like I said.

Don't know if Replacements LTD buys full sets, but it would be worth a try!  Any of the replacement china places might be interested!

True KC !! Replacements has a standing ad on the website to purchase collections,,or they did !! I assume its still there !! But,,,you are looking at quite a bit less than current value !!   Its a pretty pattern and anything blue & white usually sells well !!~

Thanks for all the advice on this. I checked out replacements.com and they do buy entire sets however still researching other areas. Have found some very informative sites. Here is one in case someone else is interested or is looking for the same type of information;

This one is good for dating and identifying the pieces

Hope this helps others.

Identify the pattern, then browse Ebay under the " sold items " section, recently introduced as an addition to the " completed items " section which obviously lists many unsold items due to unrealistic prices.

If it is Full Lace then it will be popular.
