Polychrome Clay Vase....Could it be Slip Painted Pottery?
« on: June 10, 2014, 09:15:42 am »
Hi everyone,

I found this lovely vase at a Goodwill in Georgia.  It appears to be vintage and I am during my research to hopefully determine the age.  It has a marking on the rim of the top of the vase.  It's hand written in Spanish. "In memory of pastor Rodriguez church San Juan".  It is in excellent condition, measuring approximately 10" X 6.5".  After my initial research I found that the Poly chrome vessels are highly sort after collectibles.  I would like to sell this one but I need help with the description.  Would you say this vase is a "Slip Painted Poly chrome Clay Vase?  Any help would be greatly appreciated.  Pictures attached

We all seem to be running late !! I am in the garden for a while still !!  In order to know if they are polychrome you would need to know if they are painted with a mineral base slip !!  You said they are marked didn`t you ?? Offhand They look similar but pattern is different than others I have seen !! More like an oriental design than southwest !!

Hi Mart,
You think oriental?   I am still steering toward the Southwestern or Latin American because of the mark (inscription).  It is written in Spanish.  I am not able to determine the type of paint.  I've concluded that it is something other than Slip painted Polychrome.  Each motif design is carved into the vase then painted.

I am back with more curiosity on this piece.  It is inscribed by hand and I really would love to obtain provenance. Take a look at some pottery from Cocle Panama (Church of San Juan), a church with name sake is located in that reqion. Your opinion is appreciated. New photos attached.

Are these pics yours ?? Or the one you wanted us to look at ??   I do not remember the details of your vase,,other than it did not strike me as southwest !!  South American or Spanish would be more in line !!

This is what I think of when someone says Southwest pottery !! These are San Juan pottery !! Or did you mean something different !!  Just trying to figure where to look for yours !!

Thank you Mart for having patience with me.  Okay, I understand how confusing this might sound.  The question I have now is in your opinion does this vase resemble the pottery from the Cocle (Panama) region? This is a link to the google images of pottery from Cocle Panama.

I appreciate you working with me.  I'll await your comments.  Thanks

Of the pics in that link I would have to say that your vase is not the same !! It has a few similar elements and yours looks like redware but I do not see enough resemblance to say that is it !!  Let me do some looking for you tomorrow,,had company all day so haven`t had time !!  Have some things I want to check !!

One of our ponds has way too many large catfish in it !!  Some are spawning now so easy to catch !!  So far a 6 lb, 8 lb. and today about a 5 lb fish !!  Some are going in my freezer and a few we are moving to the other stock pond down the road !!  Had my line snapped a few times and hooks straightened out !!  But its fun to get one hooked and try to outsmart him/her !!

Bet you thought I forgot about this ,,,but I did not !!  However I found nothing about the Pastor or a pottery done for a Pastor Rodriguez !!  San Juan, Puerto Rico is the most closely related style that I found !!  There are quite a few Pastors, past and present with that name in that area !!  Will continue to look more but nada so far !!
