Maybe the 19th or early 20th Century ..... but me no thinks it's from the 14th Century.

It would most likely be "carved" marble iffen it was that old.

Agin, just my opinion though.

That is probably right. I was wondering what would be the value of it. If anyone could answer ,that would be great.
Thank you.

Value would depend on many things !! Your location, its condition, and knowing for sure its approx. age !!  I agree with Cogar based on what we can see !! However a closer look might tell more !! Is there anything else you know about it ?? How it came to be in your family ect !!

We are in Greece, Athens. My father in law said it was in a house he bought many years ago. He told me he had it evaluated few years ago (before economic crisis) from a specialist for about 400.000 Euros and that it's between 14Th and 17Th. But it all sounds to me like too good to be true. Is that in any case true?

Hi, I agree with cogar datewise, and the estimation given before the crisis seems way too high, even back then. You can show this to some of the serious antique dealers in Kolonaki. I think Rhodios has this kind of things ...

For someone to have evaluated an item with that broad a date range sound like they didn`t have a clue what they were doing !!

I agree.  They may have been saying it was "in the style of" and not that it was made then?!?

AND, if he paid for an evaluation, is there any paperwork?

So you say, this could be some kind of scam to pay for fake evaluation?

Thank you all for all the answers. You cleared a lot.
But i'm still wondering what could be the value of that fireplace if it was per say from the 17th century or little above.
If you could just tell me some range of price like 1.000 - 5.000, 10.000 - 20.000 , more... less...just so i can have some idea of potential sell price, if we put it to sale.

You haven`t told us what it is made of or its size !!  Marble or something else !! No KC did not mean a scam !! Normally when an accredited appraiser gives an evaluation,, it is done on paper with them signing it stating their credentials and that is their educated opinion and the basis for it !!  But sometimes a person will just ask someone in the trade what it is worth !! It doesn`t mean that person has the expertise to give an opinion !!  Based on what I can see and depending on what it is made of and its condition ( no chips, cracks ect) here in the U.S it would bring somewhere around $1750. !!

Looking at the 2nd picture there appears to be a "grain" so it might be marble.

The other thing I noticed is the entire unit is extremely clean.  ???

qwsa, No, not saying it is a scam.  When someone pays out that kind of money for an evaluation/appraisal, they generally get a written receipt with the appraised history/condition, etc on it.  Just ask if he got that and where it is located.

Has this been professionally cleaned at some point?

This looks  to be in the Greco/Roman style-most likely made in the 1800's from Carrara Marble-that comes from Italy.  It may have a makers signature if genuine.
