question for the Experts
« on: July 12, 2014, 08:36:11 am »
My wife and I just purchased 3 small bowl/plates hand painted by Ida Upton Paine. The pattern looks like a pea pod.  on the back it has La Seynie Limoges P and P France and Ida's name embossed into the piece. We have looked everywhere and can't find this piece.  Can someone help? Are these rare and are they of value?

I will try and post a picture.

thanks in advance Dave

Her is a history from another thread. If you do a Google search there are several pieces that come up. She was from Salem Mass. Limoges blanks and others would be purchased in Victorian times and painted by artists here. Some of her pieces bring a high price. I would love to see the pictures.

https://www.google.com/?gws_rd=ssl#q=+Ida+Upton+Paine%2C+Salem+MA

This google page may help you !!  Ida Upton Paine lived and painted in Salem, Mass. The Limoges pieces were made in France but were painted and decorated here in the states.  This was a common thing back then !!  Is her name actually embossed into the surface or simply hand signed ?? Since the pieces were imports here, her name would just be signed and not stamped into the piece !!  All the rest would have been done when it was made in Limoges, France !!

I will work on trying to upload a picture, each piece (3) are different (hand painted)
The signature appears to be (etched) into it. Not raised, no color.
I had gotten the information from the Google list, so found her birthday and death and the information about Salem. but just could not find more information.  Found other items just not these pieces.
I really appreciate all the help.
My wife and I are just getting started and some items we just can't find.  so thanks to those out there with experience.
Dave

I think Frogpatch and I were typing at the same time !!  It is not unusual not to be able to find many patterns !!  These were usually done in limited numbers !!  Would have been extremely boring for an artist to sit and do the same thing over and over !! If they got the blanks as greenware it would have been easy to scratch in the name before firing !! It would have been a little unusual because greenware is delicate before it is fired at least once !! If I am not mistaken some Limoges was actually made here but don`t know if that would be the case for yours !!  It would sure help if we could see it and the mark !!
And so you will understand about value and this applies to many things,,value is only determined by what someone is willing to pay !! It makes no difference if you have the only one that was ever made,,unless someone other than you wants it too and is willing to pay more for it,,it value is still whatever you paid for it !! Old and rare does not equal value !!  Supply and demand does !!
Hope this helps !!

Your white ware was produced by Paroutaud Fre'res (P.P.)  Beautifully decorated piece and I would say to a collector of Ida Upton Paine's work maybe $80.00 in this market. This piece would hold great value if it had been factory decorated as factory decorated pieces have not been seen but are believed to exist as a business card from the firm indicates that both white wares and decorated china was produced.  The company had 3 locations two in Limoges and one in La Seynie. the company produced wares from about 1903 to 1917 Hope this helps :)
