knife boards

Hi
 I have acquired 2 leather fronted  boards but I am not exactly sure of what they have been used as. They are both just over 2ft and have a rounded top. One has printed
 'THE PALACE', 'Warranted English Manufacture', 'Knife Board'.
So they are for some kind of knife.
 
The other has a thin metal plaque of the Glasgow coat of arms at the top and embossed with
' J&A McF. G.'.

It doesn't look as though they have been for cutting. Possibly sharpening?

Any info or suggestions are much appreciated.

What does the surface feel like ??  Rough, smooth ??

Its quite smooth but has plenty of light scratches on it. Its well worn. I have attached a couple of  pics but not sure if they are visible

I can remember my father using one of these back in the early 50's to sharpen a straight razor. They are called a Razor strap(strop)

Hey Ray,, how are things up there ??  You know I forgot to ask if these were leather !!  My grand father also used one for his straight razors,,,and a few other things !!  Or at least we got threatened with one !!

Doing well Mart! Wow, I knew this one and beat you to it :D. Although I never felt its wrath, I was threatened  with one of these a few time also.

Glad all is well !!  Ha !! I can hear my grand mother now !!  All my grand dad had to do was to pop that thing and we kids straightened up !!
