Can't find many other Japanese knives daggers like this one.
« on: October 22, 2014, 08:55:19 am »
I have been looking at Japanese Tanto Daggers and Seppuku Knives, but I can't seem to find many others like this one. Can anyone help identify this dagger? I didn't remove the handle because I've never done that before. Should I leave that to a professional?

It has a wood scabbard encased in brass, I think, with a reveal to a copper-speckled metal surface. The handle seems to be wrapped with a thin rope or leather. The entire knife is decorated with bamboo leaves.

I hope I have provided enough info. Thanks!

The overall length, in the scabbard is 11.25". The overall length out of the scabbard is just over 10.5". The scabbard is 8" long. and the blade is 7.5" long.

The blade is a Hira Zukuri type. The Hamon seems to be a Toran style or mix between that and Notare or Gunome. Looks like someone did a bad polish job on it too.

I'm not sure how else to describe the scabbard, other than noting it has a hinged hanger as well.

I read somewhere that many Tanto daggers were traditionally given as a wedding gifts in Japan. After some more digging I came across this book on ebay that features similar daggers to the one I have but modern. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Japanese-Sword-Book-Omamori-Katana-Tanto-Wakizashi-1-Koshirae-Fittings-Samurai/301173758289

Apparently those were gifts for the bride...  ???

Hi TNJChris,
unfortunately I cannot help you identifying your knife, but there is a specialised forum where you surely can find some help: http://www.militaria.co.za/nmb/
