New or Old and What is It?(:
« on: October 22, 2014, 08:54:31 pm »
This is a recent find that I'm not to sure what think about it.  The construction of it and the somewhat primitive stamping make me think it's old.  Then you have the handle that is in excellent shape for something possibly old.  What is it?! ??? The bottom is completely round leaving me to think there is some sort of stand or burner it would sit on.  Any help would be great.

Thank you!

It is 9" tall with a 5" diameter.

As the bottom is not decorated, perhaps it had a base that was made out of the same material as the handle wrapping. It seems a little too decorative to have been something that would sit on a burner. Does the bottom seem pretty seamless and uniform in material? Just asking cause it almost looks like someone decided to jazz up a funnel and add a round bottom to it javascript:void(0);

Hard to figure !! Nothing in the design to indicate where it may be from other than possibly here in the US !!

Joemg311,  the bottom is seamless with only the intentions from hammering it into shape.  It does look a lot like a funnel ;D.  It is pretty heavy almost thinking it's pewter.

The wrapped handle looks to me to be more for "insulation" rather than "decoration" .... thus inferring it was used to warm or heat a liquid.

This reminds me of a kitchen item back from mid/early 90's.  Back then wicker handles were the fad for tea pots, coffee pots, carafes, etc.  I can remember quite a few sat on warming stands to stay heated until being used.  They were all sizes: for a couple of people as well as individual sizes.

My questions is, what is the metal?  Wondering if this was silver plated and it wore off?  Can you tell if the metal under the handle is any different than what we are seeing?

I also seem to remember that some countries used small containers similar to this to hold oils  They were able to be warmed in this as well.  Some felt they were for cooking purposes while others felt they were used in anointing rituals.

I'm from the South - but please don't mistake my Southern Manners/Accent/Charm as a weakness!

OK !! It could be an oil warmer I suppose but what gets me is the design !! It looks American,, Nothing there to represent any other country !!  I am thinking this may be some type of trench art !! Yes, the raffia wrapping might discount that theory but since the wrapping on the handle looks much newer than the jug,,,maybe not !!

Hi KC,

I asked a friend of mine about the type of metal and he said possibly pewter.  The handle is made up of the same material as the rest of it.  Also while looking at the handle I noticed that it is wrapped in cloth under the wicker.

I agree there should be a base as it clearly will not stand up on its own. I am also thinking a local made coffee pot or oil warmer possibly Moorish or Arabic

You know...
It's not beyond the realms of possibility that this is a male bed-pan...
Haven't found any images (of one like this) on Goog's, but plenty of references that pewter was a common metal for these (ahem) items...

Here's 2 cents more to throw into the pot  .....

Looks a bit like tinned copper .

Like others have posted , looks like something that had a warming stand .

Possible it was used for milk (chai) , chocolate , tea , coffee , honey or perhaps ghee .

Seems sorta like Indian/Pakistani manufacture , and not too old @ that .
