Price winning pig - folk art ? Perhaps victorian or american?
« on: November 03, 2014, 01:01:38 pm »
Hi, i would like to show you this lovely little painting I found. I think it's old, but not sure how old. Perhaps 19th century? It' not signed unfortunately. As you can see the years has faded the colors. It could probably use a good cleaning. You can clearly see the wood nerf through the paint. What do you think? Is it old? Could it be victorian or perhaps american folk art? Is it worth restoring do you think? Does anyone recognize the breed ;-)?

Thanks !

Niels

Your pics are a blur so can`t see the canvas its on !! Your pig/hog could be either a Gloucester Spotted Or as its called English Spotted Hog or Poland China !! I would vote for the first one !! Poland China`s are a bit longer bodied !!

Cool, thanks!

The pics are not blurry, it is because it is painted on a rough piece of wood :-).

What size are these pics ?? Try resizing them to about 2000 to 3000kb !! Its not the wood that's making them blur its the size !!

Hi Mart, they are 800 pixels width which should be enough for a clear display. I see them perfectly on my Ipad. Perhaps it's Photobucket or the website? I heard there were some issues? On my laptop none of the pics are showing in the posts :-[. Best, Niels

Yes if you are transferring from the other site to this one it often screws up the pics !! Even if yours says 800 pixels they are larger than that when you load them here !! And that distorts the image !! Phones, ipad, ect have different formats !! The issues with this website would not affect that !! Are you using jpg ?? If you will click on additional options as you are posting a pic,,look under the browse line for allowed file types and sizes !! Not that you can`t use others but they frequently do not have a good enough quality for some of us to use to evaluate the item properly !! Then we just have to guess at it !! Like the picture you have,, I can see every little square that is used to create the pic but no detail of the artwork at all !!

Yup, .... that is in the “style” of an early 19th Century primitive or “folk art”…… and it just might be one given the board it was painted on. One can see the kerf “marks” of the sawmill saw blade which makes me think it’s an original …… rather than a per se copy or reproduction.

Traveling painters would paint pictures of a farmer’s “prize” or favorite animal in return for a hot meal, room n’ board or whatever …… and it seems they always exaggerated the body size ….. with wee small legs that couldn’t support their weight.

That looks like a “backer-board” on the painting to secure it in the frame. So take it out of the frame to see “what’s what”, ……. there might be a signature on it.

Anyway, here is a comparable example, to wit:

Thank you for the info Cogar! Thanks also for the link!

I'll have another close look to see if I can find any marking.

best,
Niels

I had another close look and found some markings in the lower right corner LOL! The first part is not readably but it ends with (i think) 1829! I've tried to capture it ...

Yes !!  Those are much better !! Totally agree with Cogar !! And a nice piece of folk art too now that I can see it !!  My feeling is that it was done in the UK !! The pig/hog is in a similar style to others I have seen !! They have a unique way with livestock art !!  Can`t see the year well but looks more like 1899 to me but you can see it better than I can !!  How big is this painting ??  Just the panel not the frame !!

;D  I figured it was probably "signed".

You need to get an apprasial before you do anything else. E-mail pictures to dealers in/of folk art.
