Hi All  :) I'm looking for help in figuring out what the origins are of a huge, incredibly heavy desk/table I have found sitting out in a barn at the place I've just moved to. I know absolutely nothing about it, and I'm really curious as to its history and value- it's an amazing looking thing, and looks like it would be more at home in Chatsworth House than a farm barn!

It stands 180cm long x 78 cm high x 95 cm wide, and I guess it's made of some kind of solid wood with walnut veneering... It is definitely solid wood, as it's very, VERY heavy! It's a bit of a mystery as it has locking drawers which don't have any handles (or any sign that handles were ever present), and rounded corners (including drawers on the sides). It has ball and claw feet.

I'm attaching some photos. Anyone any ideas?

Thanks in advance!

Niemanda

WOW, ....... and a burl Walnut top ta boot.

To me, the "no handle" drawers infers it is an "office desk".

My first impression was a variation of a piano desk.  Would love to see it open!

I know Cogar.  That burled top is breathtaking!

I have found sitting out in a barn at the place I've just moved to.

So, I'm curious, are you claiming ownership or what?  ??? ???

A locksmith should be able to open it in a few minutes ..... and then make you a new key for it.

There's undoubtedly a good provenance for it, …. me thinks.  ;D

Cogar,,enlarge that pic of the top and see if anything strikes you as odd about it !!

And to answer the original question,, it is a Thomas Chippendale revival desk from first quarter of the 20th century most likely !!  Seeing the dovetails may change that date to a later time period !! Often called a partners desk !!

Don`t think there is a problem with your eyes !! I thought there might be a problem with mine !! Glad you see the same thing !!  When I first looked at it closely I said "no way" that it was almost a photographic repetition !! I would love to see the top in person !!

HA, .... no need to see it in person. That top is "wallpapered" (repeative pattern).

But it is still a beauty, ..... but very new, .... piece of furniture.

Like Yogi Bear would say, .... "Ya gotta look before ya can see". ;) ;)
