Did i buy my first antique today?
« on: January 02, 2015, 11:21:50 pm »
Hi, my name is Jeremy i went to a market and bought 2 things, they were cheap and looked "antiquey" lol. But even if they're not, i still think they're quite nice just to have.

My two items are,

Elliman's Embrocation bottle for $6 (Australian): Seems there are a few of these around from what i can see on the net.

And i got this little porcelain elephant with brass decoration, seems like it was used to hold tobacco by who ever owned it last. Paid $2 for it.

Well i hope you enjoy them as much as i do!

Have a great day,
Jeremy

Thanks cogar!

So i think the elephant, the whole thing is made from brass from what i can see and feel, but it has a hard glossy paint like a porcelain finish, with brass decorative patterns all over the elephant.

And the bottle has a number 6 or 9 on the bottom(no line underneath), most of the others i have seen are in the 1000's, so that's pretty cool too!

Hi there and welcome to both of you !!  The bottle is one of the hundreds of "patent medicine bottles" some are worth a few dollars and depending on the rarity,,some can be worth quite a bit !!
The little enameled elephant could have held tobacco in its various forms or could be a small personal ashtray !!  Both are nice finds !!

Love your by-line Route66 !! So true,,just ask any of us that are over 50 !! LOL !!

Thanks Route and thanks Mart!

I found the bottle is an old bottle for veterinary medicine, late 1800's - 1930's or so, they are ranging from. Average price of a bout 8 pounds, so $13 -$14 Australian.

And yeah, the elephant, was still being used to hold tobacco, there is still a tiny bit of tobacco stuck to the side. As for it's age, who knows! but it's still nice. I will polish up the brass tomorrow and re post a picture in all of its shiny brass glory  ;D

Veterinary ??  Mmmm,,I guess animals had ailments too !! Didn`t realize you are in AU !! Here in the U.S. during the 1800`s and into the 1900`s many traveled selling patent medicines !!  They were supposed to cure almost anything !!  Actually they either had a high opium component or were mostly alcohol !! At any rate,, after taking quite a bit of the medicine I am sure they either felt much better or didn`t care if they were sick or not !!  ;D

The elephant is Chinese Cloisonné and  polishing is not wise for the patina . Could be older like so better to look on the internet to see if it is or not .

I agree with Gerspee, It looks like Chinese Cloisonne as opposed to Japanese. What does the underside look like?

Agree with Gerspee and Frogpatch!  Appears to be cloissone.
