Can you please post a few more pictures of
1) the full item with readily recognizable item next to it so we can determine size (like a dollar bill)
2)  A picture taken apart

Are there any other markings on it anywhere?  Inside?  On the bottom?

It appears to be identifiers either for a store or owner in case of theft.

Hi SugarCube,

You know what it make me think of a perpetual or eternal light candle from a church or cemetery.  They usually have a glass interior.
Here are a few pictures of something similar.

hello pelady

you could be onto something-its such a heavy thing certainly wouldn't have been moved around much or handled much either-

Not sure why but none of your pictures are showing up with the "entire piece" showing.  Is there a ring at the top?  Try standing out/away from the piece if you take another one.

I would also look at the design on the outer holder.  Marrakech style...

Definitely Moroccan style lantern.  If you google this you will see many in this style.  The Moroccan style has been rampant on home interior stencils for walls, tiles, flooring, rugs, etc.

There have been many lanterns made in this style for gardens as well.

I thought this was a standing item...but am I correct it is a hanging lantern?

Something about this reminds me of items sold at Pier I, Kirklands, Home Decor, etc.

They even sold "heavy" ones, especially since made of heavy metal.

This would sell sell!
