I don't believe that there would be printing on the edge of the medal....  I am wondering if this was a commemorative item put out by the Liverpool Shipwreck and Humane Society.  I would first contact them and ask if I was you.  Here is their information
http://www.liverpoolshipwreckandhumanesoc.org/Contact.html

Micaela, can you take it to a jeweler to test if for gold?

It sure would be a rare thing to have the only one...but miracles do happen.  It could be possible.

These awards are no longer given out due to the lack of sea rescues over the years (per the site).

What kind of furniture was this found in?

To me it looks like the letters at the rim were engraved, not stamped, and the overall appearance with signs of wear and the exactness of the impression makes me think that there is some slight possibility that this is actually the one gold medal. Contacting the Liverpool Shipwreck and Humane Society, as KC proposed, would be really the besrt way to find out, and I would be curious to hear the outcome!

The silver ones had inscriptions on the rim, too: http://victoriancollections.net.au/items/4f72a35097f83e030860223c

Mat thanks for finding that one.  I couldn't find where it said there was an inscription around the edge of the medal.

Like I said, miracles happen, this could be "the" coin.

Please contact them Micaela!  Let us know.

You always come up with some of the most interesting items!

KC, the inscription isn't mentioned in the dedcription, but you can see it when you look at the additional photos of the medal on the site.

That's what I thought as well Wilhenri and found the original site as well.  I have searched that Captain Haskell high and low with no avail.  Crazier things have happened...

I agree that there has to be an account of Capt. Haskell and deed of heroism somewhere.

Perhaps someone has found this article, but there was an account of a rescue with a Captain Haskell.  However, the article mentions that he, his wife and 13 others were rescued at sea in 1910 rather than Haskell himself being the hero.

http://vineyardgazette.com/news/2010/01/21/century-later-epic-sea-rescue-remembered?k=vg54c56717827a0&r=1

This appears to have been an American (and, perhaps, the wrong age).  Still, it would be an interesting irony if Captain Haskell was rescued years after rescuing someone else.

 :)

Hi, I contact with the LIVERPOOL SHIPWRECK & HUMANE SOCIETY. And ask about this medal. I write again when Respond me. Really I thinks is the original. But I not sure. I found in a old bar furniture in a secret door.
