Hi Micaela ! Mart sent me a message and i received the e-mail..this sounded too interesting to miss out on !

This is some find and i'll send some links to people who might not otherwise be looking at Ebay for an item like this. It should be doing about 3 or 4 thousand pounds. The suspender ( the part attached to the medal which the ribbon is hung from ) seems to have been repaired.

The one bonus you have on Ebay is that last hour rush, where bidders might decide they simply have to own this  -  likely they won't have the chance again with a unique medal like this and in 22ct gold

Just had a quick look and the medal seems to have been awarded for rescuing crew and passengers ( cargo was mainly cattle and coal ) from the steamship Oxenholme, who went down off the cost of Brazil ( near Porto Alegre ) June 4th, 1894.
Captain Haskell was also awarded the Society Of Lloyds silver medal

I'll phone the IWM and others in the morning.
