Sandwich Glass ...?
« on: January 28, 2015, 11:49:00 am »
My mother was given two vases or cups as a wedding present in the 50's.  The lady that gave them was an antiques dealer and said they were Sandwich Glass.  I have been to the Sandwich glass museum but did not see anything like these.

They are two different heights - one is 5 1/2 inches tall and the smaller one is 5 1/4 inch
The diameter is 3 3/4 top and 3 1/4 base
You can see the pressed glass marks. It has a melon bulb with beaded ribs that turns into a flower opening. The stem is open with 4 beaded semicircles.

Is it Sandwich glass..?  estimated value?

http://www.ebay.com/gds/Whose-Sandwich-Glass-Duncan-Indiana-Anchor-Hocking-/10000000001453510/g.html

The above shows Sandwich glass patterns !!  They are all very similar !!  Your goblets may have been made by one of the companies that produced Sandwich glass but they are not what is known by collectors as Sandwich glass !! My guess would be Duncan & Miller or Westmorland made yours !! Although its just a guess,,could have been any one of the 4 companies !!

Thanks for the link Mart.  I have collected depression glass since the early 1970.  I know these are neither Sandwich by Hocking Glass Company (1939-1964) nor Sandwich by Indiana Glass Company (1920-1970's).  With the exception of opaque white all of these glass companies used  clear colors.  Duncan Miller & Westmoreland are new to me.

I am questioning if they are Boston and Sandwich Glass from (1825 to 1888)

Mart, lots of people have that same problem when they happen onto a piece of White Carnival.

And Pelady, did you look real close for a "mark" on either one?

Thank you Cogar,

That certainly  is a matching compote.  Now I need to learn a bit about Dugan or Northwood and Blue opalescent. What type of mark should I look for?

Your piece is know as Opal Open to opalescent glass collectors or Beaded Panels to Carnival glass collectors. This piece was shown in  Northwood adds in 1899, But it later shows up in Dugan adds after 1907. Dugan produced them in  iridized pieces so if yours is not It is a sure bet to be Northwood. Westmoreland made reproductions in 1940s & 50s but these had a solid stem unlike the original pierced ones. Old pieces in opalescent glass were made in  white, green, blue & Canary.

Simply decorative pieces or they could be used as small bud vases. Value around $60.00 each.

Thank you Wendy,

I had a good time this evening checking out carnival and blue opalescent.  Now that I know what to look for there are tons of it on eBay.  Some people call them rose vases, some chalice/goblet.  You are a font of information.  Do you have books on glass, old ads, online data bases, or just knowledge from dealing and collecting?   I found a nice field guide that I put in the special Threads Link. ;D
