Please help identify this very old ceramic fireplace/heater

A friend found it.  We think it's 19th century but possibly older.  But since this item is not something we ordinarily deal in,  we're hoping you can clear that up for us.
Can anyone tell us what name is usually associated with an item of this kind?  Was it used as a heater or a fireplace or both?

looks like a outdoor garden heater to me, often called a chiminea, would need to see more pics really...

I would agree. You could never use that indoors. The carbon monoxide would quickly overcome you.

Can you please take a picture with the top section removed - looking down. 

Is the top too heavy to remove easily?  Does it look as if a piece is missing?

Remember somewhere in the depths of this old brain, they used to make similar pieces with vats and was used to heat water in Europe.
