Old chairs
« on: March 14, 2015, 11:29:06 am »
Hello. I don't know anything about antiques. I have these old chairs that have been in my family for a while. I'm wondering if they're worth anything. I was told I can't refinish them because they have the original paint. Is that true? Are they worth anything? Thank you.

Can you turn it upside down and let me see the bottom !!  Was it stenciled or is the paint just a decorative addition ??  Its a nice tiger oak seat, do not usually see them painted !!

I believe they are hand painted.  I can't seem to upload the other picture here is a dropbox link to it in my folder.  My mom got these chairs as antiques in the 60's

How many of those chairs do you have?

Me thinks they were original Golden Oak and the owner applied the pen-striping …. or per se “folk art” ….. which is now their “personality” and in my opinion makes them more valuable if you were intent on selling them.

Now that paint may have been applied by the factory but I have never seen that type of chair with factory pen-striping.

I like them.

If you like them, .... then leave them like they are.

Just give them a mild "scrubbng" via use of Murphy's Oil Soap ..... and then a coat of "paste wax" followed by a "shining" via use of an old cotton T-shirt.

Okay I will try that. Thank you.  I do like them, they have been in my family forever. Just for fun, are they worth any money? Do you know about when they would have been made?  Also, where do you buy paste wax?

Did someone put the plastic floor savers in the feet or did they come that way ??  I don`t think they were painted originally either !! However there was  a time in the late 50`s and 60`s when the Hitchcock chairs were popular and many people did their own artwork to get that look !!  Like Cogar said I would just clean them up and leave them as-is !!  Value maybe $75. to $100. each if I am seeing correctly and if those plastic things on the feet are later additions !!

Also, where do you buy paste wax?

You can buy Johnson's Paste Wax at most any hardware or home products store.
