Vintage Metal Tea Strainer?

Certainly not in the conventional sense !! But I can see how that could be its use !! When making tea in a cup with a tea bag, the bag could be removed from the cup and placed in this then using a spoon, press the bag to extract the last drops of tea and they would go into the cup via the hole on bottom !! Then the object could be placed on the table flat ( feet on back) with the tea bag in it till tea time was over !!
No guarantee thats what it is but its a possibility !!

Nope, not a tea strainer because there aren't any holes.

They made tea strainers with stands (or known as drip cups).  The stands were what the strainers were put on after they were used to steep the tea...and were still dripping some tea-So as to not waste a drop. (Although there were many made that were attached to a stand.)  It could have been used for that...but not sure if that was the original purpose.

What are the dimensions of the piece?  Am I seeing correctly that the outer layer of metal is "peeling" off?

Now someone may have thought this was a tea caddy spoon - just haven't seen them with legs.  Here is one similar to yours!

I was thinking more like a euro soap (bar) holder/drainer .... it's not some baptismal item , is it ?

That is what I was meaning, mart. It looks as if it has feet, so it could sit on a surface keeping water in it, then tricked through the hole over the baby's head ....  Baptism scoops are generally small shell shaped objects which the priest dips into the font, this one could be filled from a bottle ...  I'm probably way out !
