painting question
« on: April 22, 2015, 02:25:41 pm »
This painting is from my 93 yr old great aunt. She was a psychiatrist. It was painted supposedly by a client. My friend was over today and thought it was a Chagall. What are your thoughts on the painting? I don't think there's a signature.

Hi Greenacres,

Most Chagalls that I've seen and recall (quite limited on the recollection side) have had crisper, very distinct outlines to the figures, but that doesn't mean to say that he didn't adopt a style similar to yours. The subject is very Chagallish. There is a Chagall museum ... can't recall exactly where in France, as it's been years since we visited it ...  but you could always send some pics to them?

Could also be a student just using his style !!  When I was teaching a beginners class I often used Monet as a study !!

At one point I had the painting in my attic. ;D I haven't hung it yet because I just repainted the room. My great aunt lives in Santa Barbra. I tried calling her last year. She is very eccentric. The realtors are waiting like vultures for her to die to get her property. At 93 she really didn't want to talk. My sister doesn't live far she could try asking her.

As I wrote in my post I never saw a signature unless it's under the frame. There's only an inscription on the back stating it was a gift. I am not willing to remove the the frame as I just hung it. ;D I have had this painting in my possession for over 45 years, it's been in my family i would say at least 75 years. It's staying no matter what. My friend who was an art major and good artist brought this to my attention last week. I was curious to others opinion.

Mast, I don't really think it's a Chagall. My friend is sweet, but we were told it was done by a patient of hers. Probably a fan of Chagall.

That would be my assumption,,but it never hurts to have it checked out !!   There is always the possibility that it was simply given to her by a patient instead of payment for her services !!
