Gaskell and Chambers Pub Table
« on: June 15, 2015, 11:57:36 pm »

Bought this recently, have researched its history, quite interesting. Couldn't find many with a marble top though, not sure if it's original or not. 1880 is a year that I found, although that may be when the company started?

I really love this, and would love to do some work on it, although the iron legs are quite heavily rusted as the pictures show. There are paint flakes still on one of the legs (shown), assuming it might have originally been white (most of the ones I found had white or black legs).

Anyone have/had one? Any info on value/cleaning/restoring?

Cheers

Very nice table !! Most of this type were called simply Victorian tables !! Something tells me the hearts on yours would be more for a Victorian garden than a pub !! Could be wrong and can`t really check the history of the company till I get my computer back !!  This old 98 just won`t go where I need it to go !!

I agree.  This looks like the cast iron garden furniture of the late 1800's that someone has put a marble top on.

Gaskell and Chambers folded in 1910.

Traditionally you will find their table bases and legs have wooden tops or, as in your case, a cast top.

Thanks for the responses guys.

I'd love to "paint" the legs, or at least restore them somehow. Or should I leave them as is.  Any personal experience with cast iron?

Cheers.

If it is for re-sale leave it as-is,, !!  You usually get less for anything that is repainted because buyers simply do not trust that you are telling the truth about the age no matter what is written on it !! Too many reproductions of things like that and rust happens to be very popular now !!  But if it is for your own personal use, do what you like !!

Is there any value? I did research and there was such a wide scale of values, depending on condition (I now know that marble top is not original).

With an approx. value it would make my decision to clean it up easier :)
