I know this sounds strange, but try looking at "jersey cabbage walking sticks".

It could be a cabbage stalk with all the knobs.
Quote
The Jersey cabbage is used to make sticks and canes. The round handles are formed by starting the plant in a pot, and when it grows to a certain size, the pot is turned over on its side. The cabbage stalk wants to grow up, and where its stalk bends, a permanent curve is formed.

Of a variety of Kale - the stalks are sturdy and look like wood when dried!

These suckers get TALL!!!

Mart, here's instructions how to grow Walking Stick Cabbage
http://homeguides.sfgate.com/grow-giant-walking-stick-cabbage-76144.html

The leaves are edible as well.  See you can start a whole new business and feed your whole community!

And here is a source for the seeds

And a gardener (just one of a few articles) that doubted that a Kale could be hard enough to become a walking stick....and became a believer with helpful tips.
