Yes, not antique. Mid 20th century. Looks like 1960 or so; it would look right at home next to the drink caddy, resting on a marble floor.

I thought maybe 40`s or so but you could be right !!  This type furniture is not my strong point !!  Have you seen any similar to this Ghopper ??  Or know where they were imported from if that's the case ?? I am guessing an Asian/Chinese import !!

Re-posting the pics so that you can see them!

Hi Everyone,

Thank you for the responses. Thank you Mart for posting this for me. I was wondering if you had any idea regarding the possible value of a cabinet and mirror like this? The reason I am asking is because I'm planning to have it restored. Some of the mirrored panels are loose. I know it's worth it because it's sentimental, but if the cost is too out of proportion to the value, I may just work with the mirror instead of the entire cabinet. By the way, I am in the San Francisco area if that helps.

Hi there !!  Glad you decided to join us !!  I think it is worth a bit of a restoration but do not go overboard !!  In your area I can see it  at about $1200. to $1500. with no problem !!

Re: Eglomise Cabinet

Hi Everyone,

I thought I would post a follow up about my cabinet and mirror because you were all so kind to respond to my post. It is currently being restored at an antique restoration shop in San Francisco that specializes in glass and mirrors. It made the journey from Los Angeles to San Francisco without any further damage.

I have learned the following: it is eglomise and it was made in the 1920's. It is not imported and it was probably made in Los Angeles and sold locally- probably in Hollywood. I was told that it was most likely made by a notable designer of that time period, but I would have to do some research to find out more. I was very excited to learn more about this piece because it is so special to me. Now, if I could only find out who designed it, or where it was sold! Any ideas?

I must disagree with your restorers !! Do not think you will find this from the 1920`s and it is not a typical eglomise technique !!  It is a smoked and hand enameling technique !! Eglomise is a gilding and etching process and I do not see that here !!  At least not in the pics you provided !!  Could be something I can not see of course !!
Is there a number on the back of either the cabinet or the mirror by any chance ??  While imported furniture is not exactly my area,, 20th century furniture is !!  Can not think of a designer anywhere that produced this type work !!  Could have been purchased in some of the Chinese areas around the area !!  Hope I am wrong but that is my feeling about it !! Keep us informed of your research and I will look as well !!  Can always learn something if I am incorrect !!

I've had three different well known antiques restoration/dealers look at the piece and they are all in agreement that it is from either the 20's or 30's, it's eglomise, and it is not imported. This is consistent with both my Aunt and Unlce (in their 60s and 70s telling me it was in my great-grandmother's foyer when they were children. I have been told it is called Hollywood Glam or Hollywood Regency. It was popular in Los Angeles.

The restorer who is working on the cabinet a third generation family owned antique dealer that used to have two large (three story) antique shops in San Francisco. Now they only do restoration. A second man is replicating the broken piece of trim. He also comes from a multiple generation glass company and specializes in antique glass and antique mirrors (he is also a collector). A third antique dealer offered to buy it from me and said it was "one of kind." Perhaps the pictures don't do it justice.

It is not etched and it is not enameled. It is gilded and hand painted with metal (primarily silver). The glass pieces are all beveled. The cabinet actually doesn't have any "mirror" on it. They removed the broken and loose glass panels and examined them. The mirror is framed with eglomise.

Also, this is the glass expert who is working on the piece and told me it was definitely eglomise and from the 20s, probably made in Los Angeles

Could be !!  Hollywood Regency lasted from the late 20`s through the 40`s !!  Would have been better to have known about the beveled mirrors on the original post because they can`t be seen in the pics !!  That is one thing I checked for this morning !! I guess the pics just do not show well !!  If you remember they did not load completely for me !!  Have already seen that site this morning as well !! Perhaps the silver is what is showing as cloudy !! Can`t see the silver in your pics !!  Hope it does well for you !! Please let us know the outcome !!
Not sure why they said the mirror contained mercury,, if so it sure was not made in America since they stopped using mercury about mid 1800`s !! Silver Nitrate was used after that and is still used today !!

Thanks Mart. It turns out it doesn't contain mercury- I was told its silver. They couldn't tell by looking at the photos; it was once they saw it in person they told me more about it.
