Very old 13" German stein
« on: September 21, 2015, 11:50:26 am »
Hello, I'm trying to find more information on a particular German stein belonging to my grandfather. It is approximately 12.5" tall and he believes it is almost 200 years old. I took pictures of the markings, there are more words on it that I will try to add to post #2 but the system only lets you upload 4 pictures at a time.

I tried searching what seemed to be the name but all I got were websites in German, so I guess my Google-fu isn't very good. Any info is appreciated.

If anyone has an idea of value too that would be good, it has a few chips but for the most part is bright and intact.

Edit: There is a second mark aside from the Germany one on the bottom that I couldn't tell but took a picture of. Looks like a couple of lines.
Thanks.

Your stein is a traditional German stein but without a makers name (I didn`t see one )I couldn`t say how old it is !!  My feeling is probably 1940`s or so !! But do not take that as law,,I am no expert on German beer steins !!  The site above will tell you what each of the phrases is in English !! They do not help to date it though !!

Here is a great article on Beer Steins and in the article is a link to a members searchable library.

Thanks guys, I'll check those sites out.

Mart - I think the makers mark is the picture of the bottom with the faint lines, but it was hard to make out. Seeing it in person, they look like intended markings not cracks.

Those scratches etc are just crazing.

The mark you're after is the flower head above Germany.
It's probably mid 20th and not worth a great deal but you can check this site
http://www.steinmarks.co.uk/pages/pv.asp?p=stein553

Or email the person ( bottom of that page ) and ask them

I went through the markings by category and did not find anything that resembles the "flower" logo. I emailed pictures to the author and hopefully he can point me in the right direction.

Thanks for the assistance everyone.

"Heilt Allen Schmerz" means "Heals All Pain".

Frohsinn u(nd) Heiterkeit means "Cheerfulness and Merriment" or "Laughter and Merriment".

"Willkommen allezeit" means "Welcome Always."

"ein frohes ?" means "Happy ?".  Can't make out the third word but this is expressed like Happy Birthday or Happy Easter, etc.  This could be a young stein for a birthday.

NOTE:  Same scene different maker.

Please open your stein and hold it up to the light to try and view the inside of the bottom.  Old ones many times had lithopane!  :)

KC, the word you could not make out is Herz, so the sentence goes " Ein frohes Herz heilt allen Schmerz", " A happy heart heals all pain".

I thought about checking inside to see if there are any more markings. It's actually my grandfather's so next time I'm over I'll take another look. And hopefully the author of that website can identify it with the marking on the bottom.
