Yep, that's it (I bought it ) however don't  believe  it's a boot jack as most of those or at least the ones I've seen / have are either wood or cast iron.  I did clean it up and it looks to me to be more of a golden hue then what I see on most bronze pieces.

Bronze is a blend of copper and tin and has different grades depending on how much of each metal is used !! More tin can lighten the bronze enough to give it that gold look similar to brass !!  Most of the trains would have used bronze,, riding on a train was an event back then and more for the upper social class !!  Top quality was the norm !!  Your bootjack looks like typical bronze with the correct patina !!  I would advise against cleaning it more !!

........ however don't  believe  it's a boot jack

I agree, it is not.

A "boot jack" should be, ..... "one size fits all" ....... and it can't lie "flat" on the floor to be functional.

Now foundries made items for other manufactures and vendors .... so that item might be "tricky" to figure out what its purpose was.

If 1836 is the production date then that was at the early part of the Industrial Revolution.

Thanks
I'm more interested  in figuring out the history of the foundry or name then what it it was used for ( though that would be a bonus) - I really don't see it being a " railroad item " however not an expert in that genre.

I would agree with this statement if it has indeed a nice looking patina for a antique bronze piece like either green or brown but black seems more like dirt an grease then an actual natural  patina.

Ditto what Mart said about not cleaning it anymore.  The patina helps it retain it history and value.
