Signed ABP Glass Pitcher ID
« on: November 10, 2015, 07:08:33 pm »
I purchased this at the TS today, it's an ABP glass Pitcher that's about 5 1/2" in height and weighs about 2 1/2 pounds and signed but I can't make out the signature.

I tried looking up a similar pattern in online catalogs and ebay but can't find one like it. It has a lower diamond pattern and towards the top large ovals and diamonds. I know it's hard to see in the picture but taking photo's of glass is not my specialty. I can take more images if needed.

Does anyone know what company made this pitcher, a ballpark date it was made, the pattern name and possibly if you can make out or recognize the signature?

Thanks!
Kevin

That looks to me like an “ownership” signature rather than a producer’s “mark”.

I have a piece of Fenton that is similarly “signed” …. but it was done so (signed) when purchased at a “grand opening” of a Fenton Outlet Store in a local shopping mall.

Thanks Mart, just got done looking there, couldn't find it. Could be a later piece, not sure though, it's definitely *not* an acid treated piece or mold piece. Look at the signature image enlarged and you can see the cut in the glass a little better although still a little out of focus.

Cogar, thanks, I too thought it was possibly an "ownership" signature but the signature from what I think I make of it does not look like a modern American first name "Ineris" or "Inerisghse" or something like that and I'm sure it's an older piece (perhaps not ABP, hard to say at this point).

Could be an ownership signature !!  I thought it looked like either Travis or Louis !! Last part when enlarged looks like Ghee !!  But with the small letters could be just one long name !!

I figured that if it was per se “factory signed” then the signature would be more clear, precise and/or easily read because it requires a learned skill in the use of an engraving tool.

Well, perhaps, but not everyone has great writing skills, especially when it comes to writing tiny, and over the course of over a hundred years, well who knows what is out there. Heck, you should see my Doctor's prescription forms! :)

What he means is that the writing does not indicate the skill that someone who creates a pitcher of this quality would have !!

Kevin;
Have you checked your pieces under a black light?
The following is from the ACGA site:

Fluorescence
blacklight
a.  It is estimated that 90-95% of old pieces fluoresce lime-green when exposed to fluorescent black light in a dark room.  The intensity of the lime-green may vary from a strong apple green to a tinge of green.  Some old pieces do not fluoresce at all including blanks used to cut Hunt’s “Royal”, late Libbey pieces and some of Meriden’s “Alhambra”.
b.  Some old pieces have been reported to fluoresce pink, purple or orange.  The pink or purple is most probably a reflection from the fluorescent black light itself and not actual fluorescence.  Some people see the lime green as more of an orange color.
 c.  New pieces tend to fluoresce dusty rose or not at all.
 d.  The specific fluorescent black light to use is the General Electric (GE) F15T8 Black Light Blue (BLB) bulb which has a relatively long wavelength of 365 nanometers (nm).  This bulb has a rating of 15 Watts and is 18 inches long.

Rauville, I did check the signed one a couple of days ago and it showed a tinge of green although my black light is an 11" hand held battery operated black light that I use to test uranium glass with. I don't know what the wavelength of the bulb is.

I just looked for my other black light and I found it and it has a GE F15T8-BLB light bulb in it. I have to see if it still works (turns on) and check it with that.

Here's my black light below.... just to let folks know who may not know what one looks like...

The results of the black light test are in. I tried to photograph the images but it doesn't pick up the green too well so I will describe what I saw in addition to the images below.

The first image is the signed 5 1/2" pitcher, I saw tinge of light or lime green.

The second images is the other pitcher I listed, I say a little less of a light green than the first pitcher.

The 3rd & 4th image is of a larger ABP pitcher I have that about 10" in height. The 3rd image is without the black light on and the 4th is with the black light on. It show an obvious almost strong bright lime green almost throughout the pitcher.

All look blue on my monitor !!  But the other one shows the pitcher better !!  Are you sure the bottom part is cut glass on the middle pitcher ?? Or is it pressed and etched ??  Does not look like cut glass !!

They are all cut. You have to remember the exposure to take the dark picture is ISO 400 holding the camera. There is going to be some motion holding an ISO 400 image in the dark (lens open a couple of seconds). Try clicking on the image to enlarge it, it should thin or lighten  the colors a little when opened.

Mart, it's cut glass, here's some closeups of the cut glass on the pitcher.... Click on the 3rd image to see the detail... The 1st and 4th image are of the bottom.
