Help identifying silver marks on walking cane

Hi,

I'm wondering if anyone can help me ID the makers mark on this walking cane I've bought.

I believe it's London (Jaguar mark) and 1930 (P) but can't find maker anywhere. Want to know maker so I can tie it all together and make sure year etc is correct and help me when coming to sell.

It looks like 'JS' to me in a shield but not 100%.

I can't discern the shield markings from this picture either.  Have you tried a rubbing?

Believe yours may be Joseph Smith, Birmingham !!  Scroll down to see the mark,, top one looks like yours !!

Sure looks like it could be Mart!  The strike just isn't complete on the cane.

I don't believe it is Joseph Smith as the dates don't match and it's a London hallmark rather than Birmingham. And im presuming that if a makers from Birmingham he will strike his silver as from Birmingham?

What's a rubbing? Literally just that? Paper over the mark and crayons type thing?

Yes, hold paper tight against the "mark" and then use a #3 lead pencil via holding the pencil sideways or slanted and with slight pressure ...... slide it back n' forth across the mark.

It will (hopefully) result in what is called an "auto-positive", meaning the "mark" will be lighter and the foreground darker.

Can you turn the marks so they are directly in front so we can see all if them ??

The date letter might be 1910.

Maker of the mount is less important if it's simply a plain band etc.

This is a "better" photo of the date marks. I think it's 1930 as is a more got hic script and the 1910 mark is plainer.

There is a Joseph Smith who's mark is like this one, but he was a Birmingham maker, could it be possible he did some work in London and kept the same mark?

That's what I posted earlier !!  Out of 4 lists of London silversmiths nothing matches except his mark !!

Could a Birmingham maker make silver in London though as it's definitely london/leopard mark. Is that possible? Sorry, I'm quite new to all this so hope this isn't too stupid a question!?

Of course its possible,, although I have no idea how it could be proven except that you have the mark that says he did !!  I will look around tomorrow and see if there is a record of him working temporarily for a London silversmith !!

I found nithing to indicate that he worked anywhere except Birmingham !!  I can`t see the town mark or year in your pics !!  Have you tried using the Macro setting to get a sharper image ??
