The Lincoln Chair

This chair sold for 449k in Oct. at Bonhams. The chair that held many prominent figures in 19th-century American history while their portraits were taken by photographer Mathew Brady - among them A. Lincoln.

An amazing chair, no doubt, but a crazy price! This should convince everyone of the need for provenance and assocation!

Yeah, the furniture form itself is almost irrelevant, it's who sat in it that matters. Big number no doubt but, it's not like you could buy another at any price which is why i suspect it sold so high.

Well, yeah. When one thinks of all the people who sat for a Brady pic back in the day, pretty staggering group of people who touched that chair and, there are photo's to prove it. Robert E Lee, William T Sherman, Mark Twain, Andrew Carnegie, U.S. Grant to name just a few. Another thing is, Lincoln purchased this chair in 1860 ( Built by American furniture maker Bembe & Kimbel around 1857 for the House of Representatives) and gave it to Brady as a gift because he didn't like the chairs in Brady's studio so, an incredible piece of 19th century history.

I said it with awe and amazement but of course that might not have come across!  And by-the-way, it took you almost 24 hours and 2 posts later to react to that!  LOL
