early? stoneware buddha
« on: January 13, 2016, 07:32:01 am »
possible early celadon glazed stoneware buddha. as you will be able to see from the pics its quite crudely made, the glaze is very uneven. at the buddha's feet there appears to be a type of citrus known as the buddha's hand. ive searched loads of pics on the net and cant find one like it all. i'll spread the pics over a couple of posts... thanks in advance for thoughts and opinions.

Hi, I do not think he is a Buddha, he does not look like one. I would not call that glaze Celadon, it is just green glaze. Actually I have a very similar figure of a Budai in with a very similar glaze and similar technique, with front and back made in a mold and then put together before glazing. I never found out anything about it, but I doubt it is very old. Maybe Ipcress has an idea about it's age?
I also post some pictures of my piece for comparison.

Celadon is a well known pottery and this is clay.

It is not a Chinese Mudman or Confucious.  Don't believe it is Budai (Laughing/smiling) or Hotei (Happy Buddha - Japanese) or Pu-Tai (Chinese).

To me it appears to be red clay with green glaze as you see in many tourist items over the years from China.

I also did not mean that awhitetriangle's figure is a Pu-Tai, I just see similarities in the two figures as to technique and glaze. To me it looks like a young boy with the traditional haircut for young male Chinese.

Awhitetriangle - could be a locally made tourist piece. Not too old but it doesn't appear like a fake, something designed to fool the buyer into believing it's Ming or anything like that

Mat - more interesting figure. Might be an interperatation of a luohan or arhat, what do you think ? The urna in the forehead, the seated pose.

This is not my area but these also hit me as tourist items !!  Top one may have been in storage or somewhere the temp was unstable for all that chipping/wear to have happened !!

Mat, just my opinion from these pictures I would say Chinese but not an ancient piece.  I also think that your guy could be a farmer/worker?  It appear he is "working" on something with a leaf?

Awhitetriangle's piece DOES have the sacred "dot" ( that is used by Buddhism, Indian, Hindu, etc.)

AND...just because a piece is chipped, crazed does not make it old.  They have perfected the art of "chipping" pottery and crazing to make newer items looks old (as well as having applied poor glazed that craze easily).

Ipcress, I think you are right, it is likely a Luohan rather than a Budai as I first assumed, thank you! In fact I never saw a Budai with an urna. Mat KC, thank you too, as I said, I also do not think the figures are very old. The farmer or boy is not mine, but awhitetriangle's.  :)
