Kevin WINS!!!! hammer price was 850k and after buyer premium, chest was over 1 million. Still, a long way from the record but it sold high considering today's world in old furniture prices.

THE PRIZE: Kevin wins a Karma! from everyone that lost!

Bidding stalled at 480k and i thought maybe i was a winner but alas, not to be, what was REALLY happening is, the 2 or 3 real players were deciding if they were going to blow through their self imposed limits, which they did.

BTW, the Crosman chest earlier in this thread, the record holder? It has the EXACT SAME brass pulls that my painted chest has, cool. I didn't realise it until i saw the video on that chest and yep, same brass pulls as on my W&M chest.

So, it has the same brass as Taunton Mass Crosman chest which is on the eastern/coastal side of Mass but it has the paint decoration of Hadley Mass which is up the Conn river valley in the middle of the state, add in it is built out of poplar, not pine. So, where does that leave me? I kinda wish i had not seen that crosman video, it presents more questions than it answers!

Yeah, agrees and painted pilgrim is very rare so that helped it. Did everyone give Kevin the Karma thingy?

That is so cool that you have these on one chest.

Yeah, knew mine had original pulls and knew the paint decorations were compass inspired like the Hadley area but, the thing is, in 1700 america travel in anything other than a single rider on a horse was very brutal. No roads to speak of so transporting goods by wagon was a MAJOR pain/expedition, its over a hundred miles from Taunton to Hadley which in that time may as well have been like going to moon for most people. That's the trouble with old furniture, there are ALWAYS more questions than answers.

BTW, to give this painted Hadley chest some perspective price wise, there was another Hadley chest for sale at Sotheby's 2 days before this painted one. It's carved in the traditional manner of pilgrim furniture, so, exactly the same form, built in the same area and for all we know, could have been from the same shop as the painted one, it sold for......37k BP included

Jacon4, that's a beauty too!  Still like the one that just sold the best.  Did this one you just linked get repainted or is that original?  I guess that's why my fav is the newer one because I love the age it shows.  The video stated that it probably had a clear coat put on it at one time.  ( if my memory serves me right). That helped it to keep its originality in the paint. I've been reading old post.  Did you post your chest on here at one time?  So many of the pics have been lost, I would love to see a pic of yours.  I love the design, they look to be able to serve so many uses.

paint was not original and feet were replaced on Sotheby chest which is why it sold for 37k. My chest is on here somewhere, its not pilgrim, its william & mary like the crosman chest but it has that compass paint decorated element, i'll try and find pic.

The paint decorated chest that just sold yesterday still has discolored/dirty varnish on it which will likely be removed and look like this chest which was probably made in same shop. This chest is in the Chipstone foundation and likely what chest that sold yesterday will look like once paint restorers finish work on it.

my W&M chest, not a very good pic but all i have at the moment, it's not nearly as important as the crosman or painted pilgrim that sold yesterday but considering it was a gift, i am happy to have it.

Love your chest!  Thanks for showing me the pic.  Would love to see this newly auctioned piece after restoration!  The colors on the one you posted are so vivid!  Love them and can see why you do too.
